Tune to Win Carroll Smith

Carroll Smith is a legend in the world of professional racing, as a racer, team manager and an engineer Smith has a plethora of knowledge on the subject of car racing. Tune to win is written for the practical engineer and probably one of the best introductions to vehicle dynamics that exists in print! This was the first book by Carroll Smith that I picked up to read, and I loved it! Carroll provides practical know-how with the theory I’m familiar with and just makes the tricky subject of vehicle dynamics easy and understandable. I found the section on tires extremely eye opening and couldn’t help drawing the traction circle in my head on drives I’d take across town. The sections on suspension were very eye opening since my good friend Greg Beaver was the suspension lead at IFR and while I had a basic understanding of suspension design these chapters really helped me understand exactly what Greg was trying to do with his designs. The sections on Aerodynamics, both external and internal, are the best reading I have found thus far on the subject that actually gives usable information to the reader. All in all a great book for the racing enthusiast who wants to understand more about the sport and a mandatory read for any aspiring automotive engineer.
